Noun Definition:

The name of a person, place, quality, action, or thing is called a noun. Another definition of a noun is " naming word is called noun". 

For Example:

He eats mangoes.
In this sentence "mangoes" is a noun because it is the name of a thing.

Types of noun


Concrete noun definition and examples:

A noun that is a physical object and can be seen, touch, or felt is called concrete noun. Anything that is seen, felt or touch is also known as a concrete noun. All physics objects are concrete nouns. The word "man" is a concrete noun because it is a physical object and can be seen, felt, or touch. "car" is a concrete noun because it is also a physical object and can be seen, felt, or touch.

For example:

Man, fruit, table, glass, chair, cup, car, bicycle, etc.

Abstract noun:

The name of some value state or action is known as an abstract noun. The sensation of a person is also known as an abstract noun. The feeling is not a physical object. 

For example:

Truth, Kindness, Sickness, Hatred, Fear, Joy, Pleasure, etc.

Countable noun:

A countable noun is a noun that can be definitely calculated is called a countable noun. 

For example:

Eggs, Spoons, Knife, Plate, Chairs, Tables, etc.

All things are countable noun because things are easily counted separately.

Uncountable noun:

The uncountable noun is a noun that cannot be calculated in terms of numbers are called an uncountable noun. Things that we cannot count separately is also known as an uncountable noun. 


For example: 
Milk, tea, juice, sugar, sand, oil, salt, etc.

These things are not calculated in terms of numbers and we can't count them separately.

Collective noun:

A collective noun is a noun that holds a collection of people or that contains people is known as a collective noun. The word "team" is a collective noun because "team" contains many people. "army" is also a collective noun because the word "army" contains many people.

 

For example:

Army, public, assembly, team, family, nation, etc.

Compound noun:

A compound noun is a word that is prepared by two words. Compound nouns are made of two or more parts and connected with a dash or without it. The word "bedroom" is a compound noun because two words are linked to "bed" and "room". The word "milkshake" is also a compound noun because "milk" and "shake" are two words.


For example:
Gold-ring, milkshake, bedroom, classroom, keychain, etc.

Proper noun:

The specific name of person & Specific name of the place and specific name of a thing is called a proper noun. The specific name such as "Allama Iqbal" is a proper noun as it is the name of a particular person.

For example:

Names of a particular person: Ali, Quaid-e-Azam, Allama Iqbal, Ch. Rehmat Ali, Sir Syed Ahmad Khan, etc.

Name of a particular place: Lahore, New York, Beijing, Dubai, etc.
Other: Sunday to Saturday, January to December, Name of animals, etc.

Common noun:

The name of common persons, places, or things is called a common noun. The word "man" is a common noun, the word "cat" is a common noun, the word "Irfan" is a common noun, and "mango" is also known as a common noun.

For example: 
Cat, Cow, mango, Irfan, man, woman, etc.

Singular noun:

The noun which indicates on person, place, or thing is known as a singular noun. The word "man" is a singular noun, "woman" is a singular noun, "cat" is also known as a singular noun.

For example:
man, woman, cat, Irfan, donkey, etc.

Plural noun:

A plural noun is a noun that contains more than one person is called a plural noun. The word "men" is a plural noun because it contains more than one person. The word "women" is a plural noun because it contains more than one person.

For example:
men, women, cats, dogs, bottles, mobiles, websites, etc.

Material noun:

The material noun is the name of some material of which things are made is called material noun. "gold" is a material noun. "silver" is a material noun. "iron" is a material noun.

For example:

Gold, Silver, Iron, Steel, Platinum, etc.
