Past indefinite tense rules :

Past indefinite tense affirmative sentences rule or structure:

Subject + 2nd form of verb + object

In past indefinite tense affirmative sentence rule or structure, the subject is also known as "he, she, it, I, we, they, you, singular, plural". 

Always use 2nd form of a verb in affirmative/ simple sentences of past indefinite tense.

Examples:


He went to school.

According to the structure of past indefinite tense, always use the second form of the verb. "Go" is the first form and its second form is "went", in this way we use the second form of the verb in this sentence because it is an affirmative sentence of past indefinite tense

I took tea.

"took" is the second form of the verb

They worked hard.

"worked" is second form of verb.

The peon rang the bell.

This is an affirmative sentence, so we use the second form of the verb that is "rang"

Past indefinite tense negative sentence:

Subject + did not + first form of verb + object.

Always use 1st form of the verb in past indefinite tense negative & interrogative sentences.

Use of "did" in past indefinite tense:

"did" is helping verb in past indefinite tense. "did" is always used in interrogative & negative sentences of past indefinite tense. We use "did" when "subject" is "he, she, it, I, we, they, you, singular, plural". 

We will use "did" with all kinds of negative and interrogative sentences of past indefinite tense. 

 For Example : 

  • Ali did not go to school.
  • They did not teach English.
  • I did not write a letter.
  • You did not read a book.
  • He did not see a snake.

Past indefinite tense interrogative sentences:

Did + subject + first form of verb + object + ?

"did" always be written at the beginning of past indefinite tense interrogative sentences.  

Past indefinite tense interrogative sentences:


  • Did she read a book?
  • Did they speak loudly?
  • Did we play Hockey?
  • Did the lion kill a goat?
  • Did Ali cook food?
"did" is always be written at the beginning of the sentence.

Past indefinite tense sentence:

Past indefinite tense helping verb:

Helping verb is not used in Past indefinite tense affirmative sentences. Helping verb "did" is used in Past indefinite tense negative sentence. Helping verb is also used in Past indefinite tense interrogative sentences.
